Netflix Adding Subtitles to Instant View

Netflix announced on its blog that it has enabled closed captioning (subtitles) for a number of its TV shows and movies. It is only available for streaming to a computer, but it is a good start. To get an idea of how it will look, check out their screenshot below.

Console and other non-computer customers take heart though. 5.1 audio and subtitles are in the works this fall. The listed products were the various consoles, Blu-Ray players and DTV. Currently there are about 100 titles available, with more on the way.

Lost fans are the early winners of this new feature. Seasons 1-4 are currently among the available titles. I don’t usually watch Netflix on my computer, so I will be waiting for the Fall release on the consoles. I suppose I could connect my Vaio to my TV to use the feature early, but for now I am content with the subtitle-free version while I wait for the console release. I think the traveling users will get the most out of this new feature in the short term.

Now that Netflix is fixing these basic problems it needs to focus on bringing more titles to the instant view collection. Especially as it bows to the movie studios and delays new releases. Once it adds better movies to the streaming collection it will be hard to beat.
