Amazon Announces New Kindle

Amazon has been really busy lately. Today Amazon announced two new Kindle readers, one with 3G and Wi-Fi, and another with just Wi-Fi. They are virtually identical in every other way. Amazon has made some improvements too, as these devices are even smaller than the Kindle 2 but retain the 6″ screen size. Check it out in the image below.

  • 4GB internal (3GB available)
  • Up to a month of battery life without wireless, 10 days with wireless
  • Charge with included power adapter via the included USB cable
  • HSPDA modem (3G) with EDGE/GPRS backup (In 3G version)
  • 802.11b/g Wi-Fi (no enterprise or peer-to-peer connections)
  • USB 2.0 with micro-B connector for PC or Mac
  • 3.5 mm audio jack and rear-mounted speakers
  • Native support for Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, Audible (AA, AAX), MP3, unprotected MOBI, PRC
  • Can convert HTML, DOC, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP

The new Kindle offers a sharper screen, a smaller frame, less weight, a Webkit-based browser, better storage, and built-in WI-Fi. The 3G version will be available for $189, while the Wi-Fi only version will cost $139. The Kindle comes in Graphite or White, and will be available August 27.
