iTunes 10 Now Available

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Of all the things announced at today’s Apple event, the only thing currently available is iTunes 10. It looks like you have to download it from rather than perform an update check from iTunes. I’m sure this will be remedied shortly. There are a lot of new features with iTunes 10, among which is a social networking tool called Ping. Let’s take a quick look at the new features.

Ping is built into iTunes 10. It allows you to follow your favorite artist to learn about upcoming concerts, music the artist likes, music for sale, and more. Jobs was quick to point out the privacy features in this morning’s event. You can choose to allow everyone to see your information, restrict it to the people you approve, or leave it turned off. It is really easy to set up. You simply click one of the available options. Ping is considered by many to be the final nail in the MySpace coffin, but we’ll have to wait and see.

You can now rent HD TV shows for 99 cents apiece. Jobs considers a buck per episode to be cheap enough to rent several times. I am not sure I am interested in paying a dollar for every single show I watch. It’s nice that it is HD, but a buck per episode can get pricey pretty fast.

iTunes 10 also features AirPlay, a method of playing music wirelessly across compatible devices. These devices are coming soon, and will enable you to stream music wherever you want it.

Apple TV, a new and improved version of the original is also coming soon. Apple TV will offer HD movie streaming and rentals, but no movies or shows are available for purchase. It is being described as watching TV a la carte. The shows are commercial free.

iTunes 10 has the potential to revolutionize online music networking. By allowing you to follow musicians and see what they are listening to as well as upcoming concert information and more, iTunes is set to become a social powerful social tool. It will be interesting to see how well these updates are received. What about you? Do you like the old or the new iTunes better? Let me know in the comments.
