Gesture Search Double Flip Fail?

Friday, August 20th, 2010

I watched a video after Google’s recent press conference about a new feature for Gesture Search -the “Double Flip” technique. At the time I apparently didn’t watch closely enough because I assumed it was a Froyo feature. I watched the video again today, and it is available on Android 1.6 and above. Check out the video below.

The problem is, it’s not that simple. In fact, I can’t get it to work at all. I noticed a Gesture Search update on my Xperia X10 yesterday and installed it. I figured I would be good to go. Not quite. At least not yet. Looking at the comments on the YouTube video I am not alone. An HTC on Android 1.5 is too old for the feature, but someone else had a Droid 2 on Froyo. It’s nice to know I’m not alone with this problem.

Gesture Search is a great feature. I’ve played with it on a few devices, and depending on the device it can be really convenient or really annoying. This double flip technique can be really useful, but as I mentioned it doesn’t work for me.

How about you? Have you had any problems with it? Let me know in the comments with both the phone name and Android version you’re running. It will be interesting to see if there are any patterns.
