Droid R2-D2 Now Available on Verizon

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

The wait is over. The Droid R2-D2 is now available at Verizon. You can hunt for it on Verizon’s site or just go through the Droid Does site.

The Droid R2-D2 is available for $250 after a $100 discount, for both new and existing customers. This price requires a 2-year contract and a data plan at $30/month or higher. The non-contract price is $600.

Here are the specs:

  • Android 2.2
  • 3.7″ Touch Screen
  • TI OMAP 1GHz processor with Dedicated GPU
  • 5.0 Megapixel Camera
  • Slide–out QWERTY Keyboard
  • 8GB Internal memory
  • 8GB microSD Pre–installed
  • Exclusive “The Best of R2–D2″ movie with Original Cantina Music
  • Exclusive Empire Strikes Back Binoculars App
  • Star Wars Live Wallpapers
  • Star Wars Interactive Wallpapers
  • Bluetooth Stereo Support
  • Skype Mobile
  • V CAST Media Manager

The phone’s R2-D2 exterior took a while to get used to. There was a collective groaning among Star Wars and Android fans when pictures first leaked. While I think there could have been a bit more fidelity to everyone’s favorite Droid, it isn’t so bad.

As with the other Droid 2, this phone lacks a substantial camera. 5 megapixels is barely better than my old Sony Ericsson Walkman phone. You would think that a smartphone could pack better camera.

The Droid R2-D2 is available for a limited time, so if you are a Verizon customer this might be the Droid you’re looking for. I’m pretty happy with my Xperia X10, even if I am stuck on AT&T a while longer. I think this phone will make its way to my Star Wars collectibles once it goes on Ebay at a discount in a few years. If I were a Verizon fan though, I would probably have picked this one up, even with the small camera. I still like slide-out keyboards, even if they make a phone a bit bulkier. Motorola has done a really good job with the Droid series though. It would be nice to see something better than the Backflip at AT&T. The Flipout isn’t much better, if it even comes.

If you pick up a Droid R2-D2, you’ll have access to some exclusive Star Wars content. Some of it has already trickled out to non-Droid phones, so it may not remain exclusive for too much longer. I think it was appropriate to include R2-D2 in a Droid design though. It really fits.

What about you? Are you picking up the Droid R2-D2? Why or why not? Let me know in the comments.

Droid 2 R2D2 Edition Caught on Camera?

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Engadget is reporting an exclusive image that may very well be the new R2D2 edition of the Droid 2.

Engadget compared the image to the teaser page and it looks like this could be authentic. If it is, I am a little disappointed. This is hardly what most of us expected from the phone. It looks a little boxy. Hopefully this will look better when it is released.

What do you think? Would you buy a Droid 2 that looked like this?
