DC Universe Online

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

E3 has come and gone, and there is a lot of material to digest. I want to highlight some of the games I found particularly interesting. First up is DC Universe online, available on PS3 and PC. DC Universe is a MMO featuring the familiar characters from DC Comics.

“DC UniverseTM Online is the only next-generation massively multiplayer online action game that delivers unparalleled physics-powered combat set in the DC UniverseTM. This genre-defining game puts the power of the DC Super Heroes and villains into the palm of your hands…The next legend is YOU!”

Game Highlights:

  • Control every blow your character strikes – a level of action that is unparalleled in an MMO
  • Play as a hero or villain, either with or against your favorite DC super heroes or super villains
  • DC characters: Batman, The Joker, Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman and more
  • State-of-the-art physics engine lets you use objects in the world around you as weapons, including even your enemies
  • Create your own custom DC-style hero or villain with a unique look and superpower
  • DC Universe maps: Gotham City, Metropolis, Arkham Asylum, and the Justice League of America Watchtower

The game is scheduled for a November 2010 release. It will involve a subscription, which is among the only obvious negatives. There was no word on pricing at this point. More information regarding subscriptions will likely be forthcoming. The game is currently listed as Rating Pending.

This looks like a really interesting game. Given Marvel’s success with the Ultimate Alliance games, this is a good answer from DC Comics. Past DC efforts haven’t met with a lot of success, at least until Batman: Arkham Asylum. Let’s hope this game is as good as it looks. I am looking forward to finding out.
