Star Wars Heading to Blu-ray…in Fall 2011

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Star Wars Celebration is in progress, and there have been some fun announcements. The Motorola Droid 2 is getting an R2D2 edition (unfortunately the one matching the leaked images), and now a Blu-ray announcement.

According to all 6 movies will come as a boxed set in the Fall of 2011. It was announced in an interview between John Stewart and George Lucas. The discs are said to contain extensive special features. Among them is a scene much discussed by Star Wars nerds such as myself. Luke Skywalker is shown building his lightsaber at the beginning of Return of the Jedi. It is said to be pretty dark, as Luke is determining which path to take. Mark Hamill, Mr. Luke Skywalker himself, made the announcement of the added scene.

There are few DVDs I feel I actually must own on Blu-ray. Among them are the original Star Wars trilogy, the full-length Lord of the Rings trilogy, and a few historical-type movies like Last of the Mohicans and Braveheart. The rest are nice, but most of them are simply re-mastered for the new format. Star Wars is something that seems made for Blu-ray, so fans everywhere are pretty excited that it is now official. There are promised updates coming in the future, so stay tuned for more information.
