Google Releases Voice Widget for Android

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

The Google Voice widget that has been floating around is now official. Google announced two new widgets today. One is a control panel for Voice, and the other shows you a preview of recent messages.

I was already using a shortcut for Google Voice on my phone, so I was interested to see how useful the widgets could be. Of the two, I personally have more use for the control panel widget. The recent message one leaves my personal communication exposed to anyone who happens upon my phone or is checking out my cool new Xperia X10.

With the shortcut, I could get one-click access to my text messages, and the widget includes the same feature. There is also a toggle button for changing the way Voice handles my calls. I have Voice making all my calls, so I wouldn’t need this feature very much. The Do Not Disturb button can be handy though. It would provide another way to make sure I don’t get interrupted during meetings. The widget features a compose button as well. This can be done through the shortcut, but it takes a few clicks. The widget offers one-touch access to compose a message.

If you use Google Voice as much as I do, this is a welcomed release. I should get quite a bit of use out of the control buttons. Google Voice has been rapidly improving over these last few weeks. I am looking forward to seeing what comes next.
